5 Styling Rules That Keep Me Looking Chic Every Single Day
I remember the day I decided I wanted to dress better, spend less time choosing the right outfit, and simply look good. The first thing I did was create a capsule wardrobe. It was the right move, but it wasn’t enough. I needed styling rules that could work any day, for any outfit, because even the best capsule wardrobe falls flat without a solid foundation.
So over time I gathered these styling rules, tested them, and narrowed it down to my top 5. I come back to them whenever I’m struggling to put an outfit together or just don’t feel quite right in what I’m wearing.
1. The Sandwich Method
I came accross this tip when watching Lydia Tomlinson styling her outfits. And she’s looking wonderful every time. The sandwich method is one of those styling tricks that sounds almost too simple, but the results speak for themselves. The idea is to match your top and bottom in the same color family, with a contrasting piece in between. Think white shirt, colorful midi skirt, white sneakers. Or a camel coat, a patterned dress, and camel boots.
This creates a pulled-together, intentional look without much effort. It also makes it easier to get dressed quickly because you have a built-in framework to follow. Once you start seeing outfits through this lens, you will not be able to stop.
2. Dressing for the Weather (Not Just the Season)
This is a simple rule I follow for my everyday outfits. I wear light-colored clothes on sunny days and dark-colored clothes when it’s cloudy. Before this, I only dressed for the season, but that approach limited my wardrobe and most days my outfit just didn’t feel right for the weather.
Switching to this new approach made my outfits feel more chic and appropriate for the day. This simple rule made me feel so much more confident in what I’m wearing.

3. Working Proportions to Your Advantage
Working proportions is the rule that elevates a good outfit into a great one. The basic principle: balance a voluminous piece with something fitted. Wide-leg trousers look best tucked in with a slim top. An oversized blazer pairs beautifully with straight-leg jeans. A fitted mini skirt looks best with oversized sweater.
When proportions are off, an outfit can feel sloppy or disconnected even when the individual pieces are beautiful. When they are balanced, everything clicks. You do not need to follow rigid rules here. Just ask yourself: is this silhouette balanced from top to bottom? That one question will save a lot of outfits.
4. Monochromatic Dressing
If you want to look like you have your life together with minimal effort, monochromatic dressing is the answer. Wearing one color from head to toe creates a long, cohesive line that is inherently flattering and visually sophisticated.
The key is to play with texture and shade within that single color family. A cream cashmere sweater with ivory wide-leg trousers and off-white loafers is far more interesting than it sounds. Camel on camel, all shades of navy, or a head-to-toe forest green outfit can feel luxurious and editorial without trying too hard. Start with neutrals if the idea feels intimidating, and you will quickly get addicted.
I used to have a lot of clothes in florals and wild prints, but they were so hard to mix and match. Switching to solid colors and neutrals made my life so much easier โ and now I can actually incorporate florals and other prints without any effort at all.
5. Seamless and Shaping Underwear
I believe the wrong underwear can ruin even the best outfit. Visible panty lines under a satin skirt, bunching under a bodycon dress, or a bra strap disrupting a clean neckline can undo an otherwise perfect look. So I invested in seamless briefs, a smooth bra, and a light shaping slip. It made a real difference, and I feel much more polished and confident in what I wear.

These Rules Work Because They Work Together
The beauty of these five principles is that they are not isolated tips. They build on each other. A monochromatic outfit is even more effective when the proportions are balanced. The sandwich method becomes more intuitive when you understand how silhouette works. And none of it matters if you are shivering through a meeting because you ignored the forecast.
Start with one rule this week. Notice how it changes the way you put outfits together. Then layer in the next. You do not need a new wardrobe or a bigger budget. You just need a smarter approach to the clothes you already own.
